Groups Love West Quoddy Station

It’s probably better to say “Groups enjoy staying at West Quoddy Station” than “We got groups.” The reality is, all sorts of groups love to stay at West Quoddy Station. And they come back again, bringing new members and guests with them. Guests want to share their West Quoddy experience with friends. Of course, the best way to share the WQS experience is to be here on The Easternmost Point. The word of mouth about West Quoddy Station is contagious, being spread far and wide.

From Humble Beginnings to a Small Village

I must admit, the enthusiasm about West Quoddy Station starts with me. Not ever known for humility, I am even now less humble. 25 years ago, I discovered West Quoddy Station with its 3 historic, National Register, uninhabitable, ex-USCG buildings. I fell in love with all of it. The Easternmost Point, lighthouses, Lubec, The Real Downeast. I had to save this site. Of course, I wasn’t honest with myself. I was just doing this because I could, despite naysayers.

We’ve gone from 3 buildings, 6 lodgings to 15 buildings, 15 lodgings. West Quoddy Station evolved from a basic beginning to a small village. As we grew, guests returned and brought friends and family with them. A key to growth was The Station House with 5 bedrooms, 2 ½ bathrooms. A perfect place for small groups, weddings, and family reunions. Additional lodgings became available as West Quoddy Station expanded.

Weddings, Reunions, and Just Plain Fun

I remember the first groups were just plain friends, wanting to get together with each other in a beautiful, unspoiled, natural environment. Quiet, peaceful, magical, and quite affordable. Guests had fine, full kitchens where a wonderful, economic meal could be easily prepared. Family reunions followed with birthdays and weddings. Guests sharing the West Quoddy Station experience with friends.

West Quoddy Station’s first weddings couldn’t have been simpler or nicer. A couple would reserve a lodging, announce they would like to get married. I’d arrange for a Justice of the Peace and a couple of witnesses. The ceremony would be here or the lighthouse. Now, I am a Justice of the Peace. It’s Bill’s weddings! Soon, the weddings became more sophisticated and larger. 225 guests, a large tent in the parking area, a full, outdoor, catering kitchen, bar, band, lawn games, supervised parking. All of West Quoddy Station's lodgings were reserved for wedding guests.

We’ve hosted several family reunions, always a lot of fun. Right along with that are birthdays, anniversaries and just plain get-togethers. An elopement, with guests, is planned for next June!

A Hub for Creative and Outdoor Groups

The Meetinghouse opened in 2011 with our new office, 1st floor bedroom, 2 ½ bathrooms and a 50-seat event room on the second floor. We hosted conferences, birthday parties, showers, and dances with bands. Next came yoga classes in the event room. Our friend, Teri, during COVID, needed a space for her Fit and Strong classes, working out with weights and music. Time passes, tonight, Teri, Patricia and I had dinner together. Friends together. We remembered when Fit and Strong moved outside to the Picnic Deck with lighting.

Our groups include an interesting spectrum of activities. Plein air workshops, specialized photography workshops, camera clubs. Quilting and knitting clubs have been our guests. We have had a couple sea kayaking workshops as well as groups of hikers and birders. We have hosted several marine research groups including New England Aquarium. One of the most esoteric groups was Fall training for the Colby College downhill ski team.

Marathon Support and Ever-Growing Community

West Quoddy Station has sponsored and hosted runners for the Bay of Fundy International Marathon since its inception. Many marathoners and their families return to stay with us. The BFIM starts at the West Quoddy Lighthouse on The Easternmost Point, just a ½ mile from here. Families and friends gather at the end of the driveway to cheer the runners on. This year, a green dragon even showed up, dancing to the Eye of the Tiger! The 26.2-mile race goes to East Quoddy Head on Campobello and finishes on Water St. Lubec.

West Quoddy Station continues adding new guests with old guests returning. Our popularity is still growing while we enhance our lodgings and amenities. Some guests tell me they don’t want to tell anyone about us because that may not leave room for them to return. It’s all good word of mouth. Please return, with or without your group. Thank you!

Nights like these are why people come back — a dozen voices, one fire.
