Fall's Arrival

Mother Nature presents Fall with the advent of Halloween, followed by returning to Standard Time. Halloween passes. We can now feel the cool, short days coming on. The sun now sets just after 4 PM. We go home in the dark, preparing for a cozy night, heat running. No frost yet, but we know Jack Frost arrives soon. Colorful leaves are falling, leaving bare branches with the promise of Winter.

Looking Toward Thanksgiving

We now look forward to Thanksgiving. We plan our Thanksgiving holiday. Where to celebrate, and with whom — friends, family, new friends? What time? The Thanksgiving menu is always center stage, which dish to bring, and the pies! Maybe Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade in the morning, possibly watching football in the afternoon with a piece of pumpkin pie. Most of all, time together on America’s holiday.

The Off-Season at West Quoddy Station

As West Quoddy Station enters the off-season, we are almost fully reserved for Thanksgiving, with reservations doing well for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Our weekends are booked as folks keep a weather eye for visiting, traveling, and hiking in The Real Downeast. We are fortunate to have three long-term guests staying with us now through Spring.

Sunday Wandering and Gathering

Last Sunday, we enjoyed our walk around West Quoddy Station. Wherever we looked, the new 40’ 3-flag pole seemed to be the center of our universe. The weather was about perfect — no wind, blue sky sunshine, temperatures in the 50s. We admired our old and new gardens. We now have 13 and plan on adding two more, hopefully before Winter. To the visitor, our 15-building complex on 5 acres looks like a plan, even though I know it just evolved on its own. A little serendipitous stardust at work!

Our circumnavigation of West Quoddy Station ostensibly had the purpose of gathering dried wildflowers, red berries, grasses, and cool-looking stuff we didn’t recognize for dried arrangements. It also gave us time away from our computers, time to talk, and daydream. Time to be together. We topped the afternoon off by visiting Gretchen’s new home in town to pick up poppy seeds to be planted now for next Spring.

So there we are, a little bit of Bill’s Fallosophy as we go through time in the Fall of 2025. Enjoy life, enjoy what we have. Enjoy West Quoddy Head.
