It's Bill, 12/29/24: The Christmas Whale

A Visit from Alvin, the Postman

Alvin is our postman—and friend. When not delivering mail, Alvin can occasionally be found at The American Legion with his well-behaved daughters. Alvin is also Chairman of The Sons of The American Legion. When Alvin has a package to deliver, he brings it right into my office and chats.

The other day when I asked, “How’s it going?” Alvin replied, “Not so good. I forgot a big package, I think a radio antenna, that I left on the Post Office loading dock. I have to go back and deliver it today.” I said, “How’d you do that?”

The Christmas Whale in the Narrows

Alvin shook his head. “Ya’ know, the post office is in the same building as customs, right here by the bridge to Campobello. Well, the loading dock is out back, right by the Narrows channel. So, I was out back there loading for my route when the customs guys, all out back, started yelling, ‘It’s a whale!’ I looked, and there was a whale, slowly swimming under the bridge, down the Narrows. I guess I got distracted and forgot the package. I got to go back.”

Until the Christmas whale, no one had ever seen a whale in the Narrows.

Christmas Festivities at the Library

The Lubec Library, facing the Narrows, is on Water St., right down from the Post Office and Customs. On Saturday afternoon, the Library hosted a Christmas program that was just plain fun—a Christmas variety show. The library ladies read Christmas stories, each lady taking the part and voice of a character.

The fun readings were interspersed with short carols, backed up by two guitars and a sweet violin. During the intermission, guests enjoyed Christmas cookies, appetizers, fresh fruit, and soft drinks. Over 55 guests attended.

Holiday Cheer in Lubec

Next to the library is the Lubec Brewery, serving up its own cheer. Both the library and the brewery face the Roosevelt Bridge, which was silhouetted with Christmas lights, terminating at Canadian customs.

Since no wine was being served at the brewery, we continued our evening at the Legion. We went for some libations and to hear what people were saying about us. From the Legion bar, we watched a band set up in the big hall for the annual Christmas dance. A fine time was had by all, even before the dance began.

Tonight, we’re heading to Teri and Rusty’s for our Christmas pizza party with our Fit and Strong exercise class that Teri teaches at the Fitness Port. We’ll be joined by our classmates, Paisley and Finn.
