Flag Day Reflections
Flag Day, June 14, commemorates the adoption of our American flag in 1777. Our flag represents our American ideals of freedom, democracy, and unity. This is a time when we can come together, foster, and perpetuate. It is a day to celebrate with friends and neighbors in our communities.
A Gathering at Flatiron Corner
On Flag Day at Flatiron Corner in Lubec, there was a rally. Folks of all ages, in all kinds of clothes, some with signs, different perspectives, dogs, singing, some new faces — all showing their personal support for a positive, healthy community. A very promising gathering. When I left, I was pleased that I had attended and participated. I felt good with my neighbors with a positive outlook for our future.
The Bean Supper
That same night, we attended a Bean Supper in Machias at the Congregational Church. Shana Bellows was the keynote speaker presenting local 2 Maine state legislators, Democrat and Republican. But first, the food! Four choices of baked beans, brown bread, five salads. And pie. Blueberry, apple, and more. All speakers held our interest, particularly with their anecdotal stories about each other. Again, a positive sense of community prevailed.
D Turns 18
I thought of my only grandchild on Flag Day, June 14, 2025 — his 18th birthday. I am very proud of D and his passage into adulthood. Of course, I wish him all good fortune and health. We have to provide continuity for our future generations. More the obvious when I realize he’s 18 and I’m 81. Now there’s a perspective for the future.
