It's Bill, 1/5/25: Into the New Year

Snowy Fun for Holiday Guests

The interim between Christmas and New Year’s was filled with new and old guests, with snow left over from the White Christmas storm. Returning guests from India made a snowman. New guests traveling with their children from Mexico City had an impromptu snowball fight.

Welcoming the New Year

New Year’s had fine weather. There was a New Year’s dance at The Legion featuring a good local band, well attended. Many of the over-60 crowd [ourselves included] chose a quiet evening at home, not quite sure if we could stay up to welcome in the New Year. We celebrated with perfectly cooked Porterhouses, toasts, bubbly, hugs, and kisses.

A Surprise 70th Birthday Celebration

We kicked off the New Year with a surprise 70th birthday party for Joann Case at the Legion on Friday night. Alan Cook, a popular Lubec neighbor with his guitar and vocals, played old favorites, getting the crowd up, singing and swaying along with “Sweet Caroline,” bah, bah, bah.

Dallas, Joann’s partner, played some cornhole. Tammy Simonson, a West Quoddy Station photographer, took fine, candid photos. Tom Dean, a bartender at Lubec Brewing Company, checked out the Legion bartending competition. Todd Lyons, a Legion regular, stayed in the bar but came out to share refreshments. Todd, who has been clamming for over 40 years, is a part-time stern man, does chainsaw tree work, and cuts spruce tips in November for the family Christmas wreath business.

Weekend with Old Friends and New Flavors

Mike and Angela, frequent old guests and soon-to-be neighbors, were here for the weekend to check on their South Lubec land overlooking the Sparkplug [Channel Lighthouse] and Campobello. On Saturday, we met at the Lubec Brewing Co to check on Tom Dean’s skills at drawing a pint.

Gale White, the owner, discovered us while we were talking with Gale’s mother, Gerry. Gerry attends Teri’s Fit and Strong class. Gale gave us a tour of The Lubec Brewing Company keg room to sample Gale’s craft beers, which included beer from locally grown squash, another with peppers and jalapeños, and a third blended with oak chips Gale had baked, provided by local arborist Brannin Buehner of Bear and Owl Tree Care.
