The Library as Lubec’s Social Center

During March, the social center of Lubec is The Lubec Memorial Library. Located on Water St. with an outstanding view of Campobello and The Roosevelt Bridge, there is plenty of convenient parking with good handicap access. The Library is a relatively contemporary building, pleasing to the eye, both inside and out.

The stacks are well lighted and wide with both fiction and non-fiction. Dewey Decimal system, of course. A comfortable reading area has current newspapers and magazines. There is a bank of computers for anyone’s free use and free Wi-Fi. A public copier is available at a moderate cost. The comfortable Children’s Reading room is set up for readers of all sizes and ages. There are 2 meeting rooms that can be opened up to become 1 large one. Near the rear entrance are 2 handicap accessible bathrooms. The librarian’s desk is an efficient, friendly hub.

March Library Events and Local Talent

Every Tuesday in March there are free movies at 2PM, Cabin Fever Films. John Rule’s photography had a gallery opening on March 14. In 2012, John started photographing local scenes of Lubec’s past for posterity using a vintage box camera with his own prepared emulsions. His striking black and white images are hung throughout the library. Chess Club meets every Wednesday evening. For children, Wiggles & Giggles storytelling every Wednesday. Wednesday evening features Lego Club.

From Library to Local Favorites

The next block from the library is The Lubec Brewing Company, owned and operated by Gale White. Gale’s micro-brewery and tap room offers a fine selection of its own handcrafted beers and ales, available at the bar, some bottled for direct sales. Adjacent to the bar is the listening room which usually has live music, even in March on Saturdays and Sundays. The gallery with tables and chairs is next to the listening room, another fine spot to enjoy the live music and permanent exhibits. From there, during the summer, you can sit outside in the Beer Garden with fine views of The Lubec Narrows and Campobello. Lubec Brewing Company, family [and dog!] friendly, Lubec Brewery is an excellent place to enjoy Gale’s craft beer and meet new and old friends.

Narrow Escape [overlooking The Narrows between Lubec and Campobello] is a full service espresso bar. Narrow Escape is located on Water St. between Lubec Hardware and Lubec Brewing. Homemade baked goods are offered 8–4 along with a selection of espresso and coffee drinks. Tea and chocolate are available as well. It is a good gathering place for locals, particularly the Villagers. Narrow Escape offers a fine selection of local artisanal gifts.
