It's Bill, 3/8/26: Lubec March: Basics

With winter still nipping at us, it’s time to appreciate the basic services we have here in Lubec in March. We’re Springing Forward today, March 8, sure do like that extra daylight. A little more warmth wouldn’t hurt, either.

The Businesses That Keep Lubec Running

There are several primary businesses in Lubec. My favorite is Lubec Hardware. I don’t think I could have gotten by these 25 years without Eric and his crew. Lubec Hardware is the largest little hardware store ever. Most times, Eric’s store has everything at fair prices for what I need, just 10 minutes away. Everyone is helpful and knowledgeable.

Another important basic service is Carleton Corey’s Garage, Shaun Blanch at the helm. Auto repair, tire service, towing, inspections, good advice and friendship. They get it done with a smile and a good sense of humor.

Everyday Stops in Town

Yes, we do have a convenience store, gas, groceries, pizza, snacks, beer and liquor. McFadden’s Variety is open 7 days a week, 6AM–7PM. The fishermen like McFadden’s for their early hours to start their day, a good gathering place. Folks over on Campobello really appreciate McFadden’s as they have no gas on The Island.

Lyon’s IGA is an absolute necessity to living in Lubec and Campobello. Lyon’s is a sizeable supermarket with a selection of fresh produce, meats, fish, aisles of groceries and dairy, a deli, bakery, 200’ of frozen stuff, beer, wine and liquor and household supplies. It’s unusual to go there and not meet someone you know and chat a bit, even tell the truth.

The Lyon’s family has a smaller, sister store, Lyon’s Variety, in West Lubec on Rt. 189. Similar, with basic groceries, but no produce or meats, particularly catering to fishermen for their clothing and fishing gear. Also has some bulk landscaping and pellet materials, best around Lubec.

Town Services and Community Resources

In Lubec village, the Town Hall is on the top of the hill, across from the water tower. The Fire Department is attached with rooms for the EMTs. Staffed by Lubecers, the Town Hall employees are very knowledgeable, helpful, and efficient. A perfect place for local information.

Down the hill from the Town Hall, at the end of Washington St., is the US Post Office. Attached to the Post Office is US Customs where you can pass over the Roosevelt Bridge to Campobello, Canada.

Bar Harbor Bank and Trust is also on Washington St. They offer full service banking and lending services and a convenient ATM. Maureen Lord, one of the best, is Manager.

Recycling and a Chance to Catch Up

Just to the right of the entrance to Canada is Lower Pleasant St. with Lubec’s Recycling Center. It is next to the wastewater plant. During March, recycling is open 9AM–4PM, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. I usually run into somebody I know. “It’s Bill!”

Recyclables include: corrugated cardboard, tin cans, glass bottles and jars, #2 plastic, magazines, newspaper, clean office paper.
