Spring Fever in Lubec
I guess it’s part of the Spring Fever thing. Spring is in the air. And we all have cabin fever. For sure, basketball playoffs are on TV. Weather’s not too bad, no snow on the ground, let’s get out and do something. Let’s do something here, here in Lubec.
A Perfect March Celebration
Lubec Brewery had the answer on March 15, the Ides of March. And so did the Legion, same day. Folks from all over getting together for light food, libations, celebrating birthdays, bands playing music, while checking in and checking on each other. Perfect ingredients for dry roads and indoor fun.
March Birthday Bash at the Brewery
The Brewery had a perfectly simple, great idea, as they have had before. Just have one big birthday party for anyone who has a March birthday. And invite all the friends of March birthdays and include their friends of their friends. Everyone was invited.
A cabaret-style jazz band played while a stylist sang, nice, old-fashioned mellow music for all. There was standing room two deep at the bar while others were comfortably seated on sofas, chairs, and benches, everyone talking and chatting.
Some dogs, wanting a good time away from home, brought their owners along too—making sure their owners behaved. In the side room, next to the brewing room, a piñata was hung for 15-16 children. Hard to tell who had more fun—the kids whacking the piñata with bats until candies, balloons, and little gifts fell out, or their parents just watching the show!
Conversations and Connections
Meanwhile, back at the bar, all kinds of conversations were going on. Introductions to friends of friends, handshaking and hugs. Recommendations of good contractors and painters, lawyers and legal professionals holding impromptu conferences, local politics, weather, who did or didn’t do what—or whatever.
Standing in line for the restroom, a man with an Eagle bolo met a woman with an Owl bolo. Last call at 5, we moved on to the Legion.
The Legion Keeps the Celebration Going
The Legion was having a St. Patrick’s Day dance—a bit of St. Paddy’s, a bit of rock and roll. A big crowd gathered in the bar where Amanda, the head bartender, was celebrating her birthday with some light refreshments while the music poured from the ballroom.
All laughs and smiles, just enjoying the moment, the party continued. The Ides of March need not be portentous but full of promise for the year to come at West Quoddy Station.
