It's Bill, 8/30/26: August Potpourri

August is winding down. I know! I know! Where did all the time go? I thought the kids got out of school last week. July 4th was yesterday, wasn’t it? But the calendar tells us differently. September is next week, the kids [and teachers] are going back to school. And West Quoddy Station is going strong. Labor Day weekend is just around the corner.

West Quoddy Station’s occupancy rate is at its highest ever, averaging 99%. There’s the traditional slowdown after Labor Day; however, weekends are almost fully occupied through to October’s Indigenous People’s Day [aka Columbus Day]. Every year has exceeded the previous year. And we’re still having fun, but we don’t have much time to think about standing still.

Another West Quoddy Wedding

Last weekend, we had another “pop-up” wedding. The bride and groom, family, and friends individually rented five separate lodgings for three or more nights. They had, of course, planned the wedding. But they did not mention it to me and, it really didn’t matter. It just “popped up” here. Wonderful, well-mannered folks. I don’t think most guests even knew there was a wedding.

Their Saturday wedding was at West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, just a mile away on the Easternmost Point. The weather was iffy. The weather was more variable than the forecasts. The groom’s father went to the Dollar General in Lubec to buy umbrellas for their Lighthouse wedding. Fortunately, the rain held off until after the ceremony. The wedding guests used our Picnic Deck after the ceremony.

Guests From Near and Far

Later in the week, we had a French family touring Maine as our guests for two nights. They arrived a day early, which worked well for all of us. No problem. They rested and enjoyed West Quoddy Station for three nights, fitting right into West Quoddy Station’s natural beauty and peaceful serenity.

We had some folks traveling through Maine staying for two nights. They had four Parson Russell terriers, one of which was a Service Dog. They are small dogs, 12–15 inches. Colors: White & Tan, Black & White, Tri-color, Lemon & White. It was a treat to have them also as our guests.

A Trip to Surry Gardens

I drove our monthly water sample to Brewer. On the way back, I went to Surry Gardens, Surry, just below Ellsworth. Always a treat for me, I’m like a kid in a candy shop when I go to a nursery. I knew my way around and quickly filled some wagons.

My favorite was a large hibiscus, accompanied by a large hydrangea, both flowering. Then a buddleia [butterfly bush], a monarda [bee balm]. Hmm-m, I’m still thinking of having a beehive next year. Three perennial blue asters, three dahlias, four mums, a gerbera, and a daylily. The new arrivals are waiting patiently for Morgan to find their garden. She’s already talking to them; they seem to understand.

West Quoddy Station and its gardens are looking forward to Fall, my favorite time of year. Be well.
