Autumn’s Arrival: More Than Just a Calendar Date
Forget the calendar, Fall starts in the beginning of September with the passage of Labor Day. Back to school, back from vacation, back to work. That old routine we kind of missed. Maybe not, more work, cooler weather. What are we thinking?
The Charm of Changing Seasons
Still, we regale the shorter days, the cooler nights, another layer of clothing. Resolutions to do more. Move on for the oncoming Holidays. We’re getting ready to get ready for the Holidays! Here they come! Indigenous Peoples Day [aka Columbus Day] October 13th, Thanksgiving Day November 27th, Christmas December 25th, New Year’s Day January 1st.
A Seasonal Ritual: Decorate Everything
So how do we get ready for the holidays? We decorate. We already have orange lights strung on the Office railings. There are two large pumpkins being moved around the porch, looking for their best placement. There are more Halloween orange lights on order. We’re getting more pumpkins and looking for corn shocks. And we already have four large, potted, ruby red mums. We do like red. And they’re moving around, too.
A Plan to Light the Season
Here's the plan. We start first thing in September working towards Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving weekend, pumpkins and orange lights disappear, up go our Christmas decorations, lights and Todd’s wreaths—some here, some there. And there’s the big blue and white stars on The Meetinghouse bell tower. We’re thinking some Christmas lights on Clarks Folly lighthouse, a work in progress.
Celebrating Community and Creativity
On Monday, September 8, I’m reading my May 25th blog, Catastrophe Averted, to the Lubec Woman’s Club. Melinda, Patricia’s neighbor, went away for the weekend. Her Siamese, Luke Skywalker, escaped. Patricia and four others, channeling Jane Goodall, worked as a swat team for Luke’s return to lockup.
We met Saturday night with Sheila and Tad, neighbors, to set up monthly get-togethers gathered around West Quoddy Station’s table with some of our favorite readings and local authors. Appropriate refreshments. Later in September, a local quilting group of 16 will be spending the weekend in The Station House and The Meetinghouse. I’ll be doing some readings, all good.
