A Birthday at The Legion

Lubec’s American Legion Stuart Green Post 65 celebrated its 103rd birthday on Saturday, March 21. Happy Hour was 4–5PM with a complimentary drink to members, always a good start. At 5PM, The Ladies Auxiliary prepared and presented a boiled dinner buffet of corned beef, boiled ham, potatoes, turnip, cabbage with dinner rolls. For dessert, there was a choice of pies plus a wonderfully decorated birthday cake from Hannaford’s bakery with too much delicious frosting, no dieting required.

A Full House and Good Company

Seated at the head table were the officers of the Legion, Sons of the Legion and the Ladies Auxiliary. About 50 guests were seated comfortably at 9 tables in the Stuart Green function room with its own service bar. The Legion bar was closed. I was seated with Patricia, Mike Harrow, also a Son, was with his friend, Patty Treboni, seated across from us.

Recognition and a Few Surprises

The program commenced with greetings from the Commander and a short prayer. The night was a fine birthday party at The Legion, not a business meeting. Being a night for celebration, Certificates of Appreciation were given out to Veterans, Sons and Auxiliary ladies who have helped and supported our Stuart Green Post 65. Individuals were asked to come forward to receive their Certificate and a congratulatory handshake. The handsome certificates were signed by the Commander and head of the respective Sons and Women’s Auxiliary. Recipients formed into groups for photo shots.

The Ladies Auxiliary—always at the heart of it all.

Patty, a member of the Ladies Auxiliary, was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation. Mike received a Certificate from the Sons. Both Patty and Mike have supported and helped the Legion in the kitchen with their cooking and food. Oh Boy!! Was I surprised when I was called up for a certificate and a photograph. I was tickled and honored. I have supported our Legion through donations and contributions. We all contribute to the Legion as best we can as the Lubec Legion benefits our community in many unsung ways with dinners and aid.

Music, Friends, and a Good Night

We gradually adjourned to the re-opened bar room. Making ourselves comfortable on stools and tables, we listened to Johnny Phinney sing and play guitar. Johnny has been a long-time favorite in the Lubec music scene and at his place, Twin Spruces. Relaxing from a fine Downeast dinner, we enjoyed another beverage or 2, mixing friendship and smiles together.
